Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has hinted that he wants Malawi to be a peaceful country.

Speaking at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe during a swearing-in ceremony of the Malawi Peace and Unity Commission, Chakwera said the establishment of the Peace commision will provide strong institutional framework on peace process.

“In that quest, the establishment
of this Commission is key, as it will provide a strong institutional framework within which peace-building initiatives will be coordinated with consistency, thus
nipping any threats to our nation’s peace and unity in the bud in collaboration with all stakeholders, ” he said.

Eleven members were inaugurated into the Commission.

President Chakwera stressed the significance of the Commission’s role in fostering cohesion and unity within Malawi.

Also present during the ceremony were Secretary to the President and Cabinet Ms Collen Zamba and the Minister of Local Government and National Unity Hon Richard Chimwendo Banda.

The President expressed concern over the historical lack of political will and a deficiency in general awareness regarding the significance of peace-building efforts since 2012.

He emphasized the crucial need for continuous vigilance and action. He cautioned against complacency despite the current state of peace, stressing that the establishment of the commission marks a significant stride towards a more structured approach to peace-building.

The President highlighted the importance of collaboration with all stakeholders in utilizing this framework effectively.

The newly constituted commission, effective November 2, 2023, underwent confirmation by the Public Appointments Committee of Parliament prior to assuming their duties.

The appointees to the commission encompass a diverse selection of individuals including Sheikh Dr. Ali Makalani, Reverend Zacc Kawalala, Bishop Mary Nkosi, Paramount Chief Kyungu, Dr. Francis Mkandawire, Simon Munde, Mwandida Theu, and Emma Kaliya.
