Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera with Paramount Chief Kyungu at Kamuzu Palace Malawi Leader President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has commended the establishment of first ever Malawi Peace and Unity Commission saying is a key in providing a strong institution framework within which peace-building initiatives will be coordinated with consistency. The Malawi leader said that since 2012 various efforts to establish this has been frustrated by lack of political will and he mentioned that he believe that lack of political will is just reflection of lack of awareness in our midst on the importance of active engagement in peace-building processes. Speaking at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe during the swearing in ceremony for the Malawi Peace and Unity Commissioners Chakwera said he believe that lack of political will is a reflection of the fact that Malawi is a nation that has been always at peace and ever known an armed conflict which has induced us to take our nation’s state of peace for granted. “But today we turn corner by taking our peace-building as citizens seriously. In that quest the establishment of this commission is key, as it will provide a strong institution framework within which peace-building initiatives will be coordinated with consistency, thus nipping any threats to our nation’s peace and unity in the bud, in collaboration with all stakeholders,” Chakwera said.
