Minister of Local Government Richard Chimwendo Banda has made a strong appeal to chiefs across the country to support Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera in fighting Corruption.

Chimwendo said this at Mchinji Community Ground during the elevation of Leo Hara who was Sub-Traditional Authority Ndawambe to the status of full Traditional Authority and Maurice Tambala to the same rank as Pinda.

Speaking during the event, Chimwendo said it is the expectation of Government that chiefs do not work in isolation or even sabotage the Government but work hand in hand in supporting the incumbent President in fighting corruption.

He said chiefs have a critical role in the development of the country because they are the ones living with people including the role of mobilization to different development projects.

Chimwendo said corruption has remained enemy number one in development in this country.

“As Government we rely on these chiefs, to implement our projects even on implementing cash transfer, these chiefs are the ones to help implementation of the project and we expect them to help the same president fight corruption,” he said.

Chimwendo then urged chiefs to fight early marriages in their areas of jurisdiction.

“The president wants all young girls to get education so these are the people to encourage our young girls to get that rightful education,” he said.
