Speaking during the function Mayor of Lilongwe City Council Richard Banda appealed to the community to fully support the project. Banda said this project is aimed at uplifting the lives of people staying on that side and everyone using the road. The Mayor condemned the behaviour of vandalism which has become rampant in the city. He said a normal person cannot go to the capital hill even along the city streets and start removing street lights hence the need for everyone to take care of Government property. In an interview, Member of Parliament for the area Alfred Jiya described the project as game changer. “We thank president Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera for this project DPP Built this road but its already gone, ” he said. Jiya said people of Lilongwe City Centre were cheated by the previously Democratic Progressive party (DPP) regime. “You know, we were cheated before, because this road has not lasted not even five years. The road is very new only the works by DPP Government was substandard.” He said. He said looking at the status of the road, it’s very pathetic. ” As I am talking with these rains that are falling I saw almost three streams along the road you saw there is no single iota of the road which means they coming of the contractor has alot of staff to address this problem to rehabilitate with a very permanent road with asphalt and I’m told the drainage system will be very fine as well, ” he said. He said was happy that this contract has been offered to company with experience. Jiya then appealed to the contractor to employ people who live within the area. He said this improves project ownership. DEC Project Manager Ellard Malonda assured the community that the company will complete the project within the 90 specific days as given in the contract.
