Former Presidents Joyce Banda and Bakili Muluzi receiving a Cheque donation Illovo Sugar Company on Friday donated K100 million towards Tigwirane Manja, an initiative founded by President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera to fasttrack recovery efforts in the aftermath of Cyclone Freddy. The donation will go towards construction of houses for survivors of tropical cyclone Freddy. The company’s managing director, Lekani Katandula, made the announcement after meeting goodwill ambassadors, former Malawi leaders Dr Joyce Banda and Dr Bakili Muluzi in Blantyre on Friday. The two former presidents have lauded the gesture, calling on more corporate players to come through with support, as several Malawians are still living in deplorable conditions following the disaster last year. In September 2023, President Lazarus Chakwera held bilateral discussions with United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres whom he engaged on the devastating impact of Cyclone Freddy on people’s lives and infrastructure. The President, who met the UN chief on the sidelines of the 78th UN General Assembly (Unga) Conference in New York, USA, appealed to the UN member States for more financial support towards post cyclone recovery. He also emphasised the need for international financial institutions to consider debt cancellation for the Least Developed Countries (LDC) towards achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, a message he also delivered in his speech at Unga on September 21. Since then, more countries have been coming forward for assistance.
