Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has distanced itself from being involved in political ambush which some unknown people did against the Alliance For Democracy (AFORD) in Mponela. The party has since expressed great disappointment at the allegations which AFORD is advancing while reminding Malawians that MCP believe in democracy. Ezekiel Peter Ching’oma: MCP not involved AFORD at a press conference which took place on Saturday claimed that the MCP members ambushed its supporters , beat and harassed them. However in subsequent press statement which its Publicity Secretary Ezekiel Peter Ching’oma has signed, MCP has conducted thorough investigations which disassociates the party to these hooligans. “In response to these accusations, our party conducted a thorough investigation and found that AFORD’s claims are nothing more than an attempt to gain cheap public sympathy. Ching’oma says it is unfortunate, that it has become a common PR strategy for opposition parties in Malawi to fabricate stories of harassment. “In the case of AFORD , they have been able to peacefully conduct rallies without any disruptions, which raises questions as to why they suddenly claim to be victimized now,” reads the statement. Ching’oma says interestingly, these allegations come just days after reports emerged of a rift between AFORD’s only Member of Parliament, Hon Yeremia Chihana, and their President, Mr Enoch Kamzingeni Chihana whereby the solemaker, Yeremia Chihana publicly endorsed another opposition party’s president for the 2025 Presidential elections, a clear disrespect to his own party leader, resulting in the party disowning him. “One cannot help but wonder if the clashes within Afford are a result of these internal divisions and power struggles,” reads the statement. Ching’oma says MCP firmly believes in the freedom of association and would never allow its members to engage in actions that infringe upon the constitutional rights of our citizens. MCP has since expressed committed to upholding the principles of democracy and respecting the freedoms and rights of all individuals. Post navigation Zomba Chingale’s Awakening: Hon.
