Malawi – Israel labour deal to fetch $180Mn annually

Malawi is expected to benefit $180 million annually through the labour export deal which will see 5,000 Malawian going to Israel for work.

Malawi has an active joint cooperation agreement (JCA) with Israel to allow exchange of labour between the two countries. In this joint cooperation agreement, Israeli workers have been coming to Malawi and Malawians have also been going to Israel.

Malawi has a cordial relationship with Israel which recently saw the later giving direct budgetary support of almost K60 billion.

Currently more than 200 Malawian worker are destined for Israel.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel Gabi Ashkenazi hosted a Malawi delegation from November 3-5, 2020, reflecting the special bonds between the two countries.

During the visit the two countries reaffirmed commitment towards shared values of prosperity and peace. The two countries agreed that the growing partnership and cooperation between the two countries is at the heart of a bond of mutual support, which they both praised.

Minister Ashkenazi expressed the gratitude of the people of Israel for the friendship with the people of Malawi and stated that Israel has fond memories of Malawi’s steadfast support during challenging times for Israel.

He recalled that Malawi was one of the very few countries in Africa that did not sever their diplomatic relations with Israel thus exemplifying the true spirit of genuine friendship and trust of the people of Malawi.
