His Excellency Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera So, it has turned out that President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera’s decision to find job opportunities for Malawian youths in Israel is a blessings in desguise to the majority of the unemployed Malawians. It has transpired that a lot of Malawians particularly the youths have been looking forward to go outside the country to search for employment opportunities. It has also emerged that following the dispatching of the first batch of labour export to Israel over the weekend, more and more Malawians working in South Africa and those preparing to go to the rainbow nation are now yearning for an opportunity to go to Israel. According to Afro Barometer published in 2019 many Malawians have been having the temptation to migrate to other countries to escape the country due to the prevailing economic hardship since the dawn of the century. Part of a report on the findings reads: “While half of Malawians are considering emigrating, most of these potential emigrants (77%) are not making concrete plans to go abroad, and another 14% says they plan to leave next (2018) year or two but are yet to make specific preparations.” The findings further says South Africa has has always been the preferred destination to many Malawians due to its competitive economic advantages. “South Africa is the popular destination across all key socio-demographic group, except among the most educated respondents,” Read part of the finding. True to the findings, a lot of Malawians have been trecking to the Republic of South Africa to explore employment despite the trends showing that a lot of them live in depressing environments. Unlike the Israel opening which the youth are assured of permanent rawarding jobs throughout their stay in the holy land, in South Africa many Malawians survive on piece work. Again, a majority of these people stay in South Africa illegally and they use unchattered routes to find themselves in the rainbow nation. Sadly, over the years these Malawians have been victims of xenophobic attacks. In Israel, Malawians live a relatively decent life and they dont have to look over their shoulders in fear of xenophobic attacks. All these struggles point to the fact the past regimes, particularly the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) did so little to create employment to Malawians. Even the research finding in question [which was done during the DPP] regime alluded to this fact by saying: “Citizens in uncertain unemployment conditions [by 2017] appear to be more likely to think about going abroad.” Post navigation PIL donates textbooks to Mchinji school Total Energies distributes helmets to Kabaza operators
