Minster of Natural Resources Michael Usi speaking at COP 28 Malawi Government has officially spoken at the Conference of Party (COP 28) which is currently underway in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. Minister of Natural Resources Michael Usi is representing the Malawi leader President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera at the conference. In his remarks, Usi reiterated Malawi’s commitment towards combating climate change through the implementation of the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). While welcoming the adoption of the loss and damage fund and pledges of over $83 billion raised in the first five days, Usi urged developed countries to speed up the design and access mechanisms to allow the most hard-hit countries to start accessing the funds and address challenges incurred during previous disasters. On matters of climate finance, the minister called the conference to consider closing matters related to the establishment of the new collective quantified goal on climate financing, beyond the $ 100 billion per year pledge that was made years ago. Being the first Conference of Parties to carry out the first Global Stocktake (GST), a voluntary assessment of committed actions and outcomes since the Paris Agreement’s inception, Usi said that the report must be strong enough to represent the aspirations and desires of people worldwide, particularly those who are most impacted by the effects of climate change. It has now become a habit for developed nations to make nemerous pledges and do nothing to fulfill their pledges.
