Pledges to support all constitutional bodies President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera said it is absolutely imperative for Malawi to build its international support systems like UN Human Rights mechanism, Climate Conferences and other multi-lateral relationships. Chakwera announces five international commitments that he recently made to the international community on behalf of Malawi which include ; commitment to actively engage in the United Nations human rights mechanism, including the Human Rights Council and treaty bodies, commitment to adopt legislations and policies that provide enhanced protection for marginalized groups, including women, children, older persons as well as persons with disabilities in order to make sure that no one is left behind. He also announces that he has made commitment in issues of transparency and accountability, development and implementation of business and human rights action plan as well as a commitment in adoption of climate resilient and sustainable practices in all sectors of Malawi. The Malawi leader made the sentiments during the commemoration of International Human Rights Day held at Chigumukile school in Blantyre. “When I toured the Southern Region during Operation Tigwilane Manja eight months ago following the devastation caused by Cyclone Freddy, three things we’re very clear to me. It was clear that people’s enjoyment of their human rights here were compromised and in danger. It was also clers that the Malawians choosing to surrender their rights in order to take up the responsibility of serving the victims sacrificially and generously. And it was clear that the help that Government and citizens were extending to victims was not going to be enough and needed to be reinforced by international support,” he said. The President was quick to react that international relationships here in SADC Region and other international partners has been a key to the countries development not only in devastating periods but also afterwards. He has also warned against politicizing the issue of international support.
