The Lilongwe City Council on Friday launched this year’s tree planting exercise at the function which took place at Area 18 interchange road. Speaking during the function the Lilongwe City Mayor Councilor Richard Banda beamoned high levels of economic activities which are destroying the forest. Banda said apart from wanton cutting down of trees , high levels of sand and quarry mining , is also having negative impact on climate change and on environment. LILONGWE CITY MAY COUNCILOR RICHARD BANDA ADDRESSING THE MEDIA The Mayor reminded Malawians on the floods which hit the country and that many lives and property were lost. Banda said such calamities should be avoided at all costs. The Mayor has since advised Lilongwe residents to plant more trees and conserve nature. In his speech Lilongwe City Centre Constituency Parliamentarian Alfred Jiya condemned cutting down of trees for home use as main challenge the city is currently facing. Jiya called more civic education for the citizens to understand. This year exercise target to plant 10,000 trees.
