Malawi leader, Lazarus Chakwera has described education and culture as instrumental in ensuring that Malawi becomes a self-reliant nation.

He was speaking during a development rally he conducted at Phillip Holseman ground in Dedza on Thursday, 22nd February 2024.

Addressing the rally soon after officially launching construction of 10,900 classroom blocks and 1,000 sanitary facilities (changing rooms) under the Malawi Education Reforms Program which came into existence in 2021, Chakwera said time has come for government primary school learners to have an improved learning environment, including a girl child.

“Although we say education helps to change individuals, but education is nothing without upholding culture, as we end up grooming plunders of public resources to enrich themselves using their education knowledge, but we have come to correct things” Said President Chakwera.

He then said leaders have to build on the foundations laid by their predecessors for the betterment of the citizenry and development continuity.

Describing his leadership as being a servant for all Malawians, Chakwera said education has to be distributed equally across the country, hence the 10,900 classroom blocks to benefit all the districts.

Chakwera has since commended Senior Chief Kachindamoto for her role in discouraging early marriages and promoting girl child education.

However, during the rally Chakwera talked highly against mob justice on elderly and committing suicide among Malawians.

In his remarks, Secretary General for MCP, Eisenhower Mkaka said education is a tool that makes productive citizens, and thanked President Chakwera for prioritizing education by among others initiating construction of 10,900 school blocks first of its kind since 1994.

“Your government has invested, and the World Bank also has pumped funds towards the MERP project. But all this is because of your leadership which continues to attract donor partners to join you in the aspiration of developing Malawi” Said Mkaka.

He further commended President Chakwera for equitably distributing developments in all districts and promoting teachers based on their performance across the country which he said was not the case with the previous administration.
