Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, Jean Sendeza has called on authorities to desist from corruption when registering new beneficiaries of the social cash transfer programme ( SCTP),citing that the programme targets the ultra poor and vulnerable people. Sendeza was Speaking on Tuesday in Nkhata-Bay district during the interaction meeting with beneficiaries of the programme in Nkhata-bay and Nkhotakota districts. Hon Jean Sendeza – Minister of Gender According to the minister, persons with disabilities, the elderly and those who are chronically ill should be prioritised under the social cash transfer programme. “The government has social protection programmes such as the Social Cash Transfer, Climate Smart Public Works and the Affordable Input Programme to benefit those who are ultra poor and vulnerable,” she said. The Minister further disclosed that the government has increased the amounts of money channelled toward social cash transfer programme. She said: ” following the increase of the money pumped into the programme, the number of beneficiaries will be increased from 293,000 to 325,000. Traditional Authority Zilakoma of Nkhata- bay district said the SCTP is benefitting people in his area as they are able to send their children to school, acquire assets and run small scale businesses. T/A Zilakoma has since advised the beneficiaries to make good use of the money as in future they graduate from the programme.
