Moses Kunkuyu addressed the issue of the MK6 billion in NEEF loans that were reported as written off. He emphasized that these loans have not been forgiven and that efforts are underway to recover every single kwacha. The Minister acknowledged the confusion and misinformation surrounding this announcement, stating that the written-off loans are considered bad debts according to accounting principles and should not be reflected in NEEF’s account statements. Kunkuyu emphasized that NEEF loans are not free, and recipients should not assume they are receiving free money. He warned that those who fail to repay their loans could face legal consequences. NEEF CEO Humphrey Mdyetseni reiterated that NEEF loans are not politically motivated but are intended to empower Malawians economically. He emphasized that all beneficiaries of previous loan schemes who have not repaid their loans will be pursued for repayment and will not be eligible for further financial support from NEEF. Mr. Mdyetseni, NEEF CEO Isaac Ramsy Khan, MCP Youth Director for the Eastern Region, added that while many youth groups in the region have benefited from NEEF loans, there are still groups awaiting loans in the next batch.
