President Lazarus Chakwera who is in Dallas, Texas United States of America has finally landed a 350 million United States dollar agreement with the Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact (MCC) Compact 2 which will be used to construct four road corridors across the country under the increased Land Productivity Project.

The Compact 2 which was inaugurated on Monday, 6th May 2024 in the USA was witnessed by among others, Ms. Alice Albright who is the MCC’s Chief Executive Officer, and President Lazarus Chakwera.

Speaking during the inauguration of the second compact of MCC, President Chakwera said, he was proud to have fulfilled the required conditions set for the compact to become effective, adding that the compact will address challenges in roads infrastructure especially in rural areas.

“With poor rural road infrastructure, we see extremely high prices of farm-to-market transport and in some cases, significant market power of transporters and agro-processors.

This compact exemplifies Malawi’s steadfast commitment to building a more resilient and self-reliant nation” Said President Chakwera.

On her part, the CEO for the MCC, Ms. Albright described the K612 billion grant for infrastructure and land policy reforms as a significant investment in the people of Malawi.

The MCC Compact 2 will see the construction of a 67kms stretch from Chikwawa in Rumphi to Euthini in Mzimba, a road from Mkanda in Mchinji to Mwase/Linga in Kasungu, covering a distance of 88kms, a 53 kms road from Chileka to Chigwirizano via Phiri la Njuzi and Malimgunde in Lilongwe, and the upgrading of 79km-stretch from Chantulo in Mangochi (Off Golomoti-Monkey Bay road) to Mkutumula near Balaka market in Ntcheu.
