President Lazarus Chakwera on Saturday, 18th May 2024 urged Malawians to be proud of their country and preach good of the nation.

President Chakwera was making the remarks during the enthronement of Rt. Reverend William Joseph Mchombo as Bishop of the Diocese of Upper Shire for the Anglican Church held at St. Peters & Paul Cathedral church in Mangochi.

Speaking during the ceremony, Malawi leader said time has come for Malawians to applaud those who have and continue to do Malawi pride, and celebrate their achievements regardless of any difference in affiliation.

Further, Chakwera described the day as special to remind Malawians on the importance of unity and revival as they gather in different places for various activities including during prayers and international gatherings among others.

“Today is a day of revival. Today is a day of joy, reunion, and is a day of a great example to all Malawians for a number of reasons. As we have gathered today before the throne of our God, we should remember that we are all His children.

Secondly, today is a joyous day as it reminds us to celebrate the achievements of others regardless of what we are passing through. I therefore congratulate the Anglican Church, and Bishop William Mchombo for the achievements. This ceremony has also united us as one people looking at different areas where we have come from and affiliations we have, but we have all seen it important to gather here today because what unites us is very important than what can divide us” Said President Chakwera.

He then urged Malawians to unite in developing the country for attainment of 2063 vision.

President Chakwera has since directed the Department of Disaster Management (DoDMA) to extend its assistance to the people of Mangochi in areas which have been affected by the water levels of Lake Malawi, such as Ngalamo, Mwanyama, Mapira, Kalonga, Mpondasi, Saiti Kadzuwa, Mtalimanja, and Chipalamawamba.

Speaking earlier, the Chairperson for the main organizing committee of the ceremony, Winasi Boma thanked President Chakwera for the assistance of cows and K5 million in cash made towards the event.

Meanwhile, Bishop Mchombo has committed to call upon Anglican Church members to engage in planting, nurturing, and preserving trees to overcome the climate change catastrophes in Malawi.
