BLANTYRE, MALAWI – A faction of concerned officials within the UTM party has criticized Secretary General Patricia Kaliati for unilaterally addressing the nation on party matters, threatening legal action within seven days. The concerned officials argue that Kaliati and a few others addressed the nation without the consent of the interim President, Vice President of the party, and accuse them of acting childishly. The officials demand a more sober and collective approach to addressing party matters. Some UTM members, including Kaliati, have publicly accused the government and Malawi army of responsibility for Chilima’s death, further fueling tensions within the party. The internal divisions and accusations have raised concerns about the party’s future and its position within the Tonse Alliance. The UTM party, founded by the late Saulos Klaus Chilima, has been holding candlelight ceremonies in his honor. Chilima, also the country’s former Vice President, passed away recently.
