One dies, 8 injured in Nkhotakota road accident By Wongani Mkandawire. Nkhotakota, July 24, Mana: A 40-year-old female passenger has died while eight others have sustained various degrees of injuries following a road accident that occurred at Chisaka village along Nkhotakota-Salima M5 road in Nkhotakota district. The deceased has been identified as Mwayi Mlamba who hailed from Phanga Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kabudula in Lilongwe. According to Nkhotakota Police Public Relations Officer Paul Malimwe, the driver, Mavuto Kapesa was driving a motor vehicle registration number ZA 2403 Hino Ranger van 10 tonner with 8 passengers on board and bags of rice from the direction of Nkhotakota heading to Salima. Malimwe said upon arrival at Chisaka village, as he was ascending a slope, the driver failed to engage the gear prompting the vehicle to start moving backwards. “As such, the driver failed to control the motor vehicle and it swerved offside where it overturned once,” he said. Following the impact, Mlamba sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Nkhotakota district hospital while the other eight passengers were rushed to Alinafe private hospital where they were treated as outpatients.
