It was all pomp as Malawi Leader president Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, majestically entered the City of Mzuzu, on Tuesday afternoon. Business came to a stand still as a group of Kabaza riders clad in Malawi Congress Party (MCP) regalia led the presidential convoy, forcing it to move at a snails pace to Mzuzu, Katoto – also known as Shoprite- Roundabout, where a multitude of the city’s residents had gathered to give Chakwera, who will be in the city for a period of one week to perform a number of official public engagements, a rousing reception. Speaking to the mammoth crowds, President Chakwera lauded the people for remaining steadfast in the face of various social and economic challenges, that have rocked Malawi recently. President Chakwera also called on all Malawians to join hands with government as his administration strives to reset the country’s economy. He then stressed the need to work hard in building a new Malawi. People from all walks of life including government officials and the Speaker of Parliament, Hon Catherine Gotani Hara; politicians; business leaders; the Clergy, as well as traditional leaders, were all in attendance to welcome the Malawi leader. Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Second Vice President who is also Minister of Defence Harry Mlekanjala Mkandawire praised Chakwera for abolishing the quota system of selecting students to universities. He further appealed to the gathering to coexist peacefully regardless of political beliefs. MCP Regional Chairman for the North Joseph Chavula echoed President Chakwera’s sentiments that he would earn a second term of office come rain or sunshine and as such the RC is rallying behind the Malawi leader.
