Malawi Leader President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera says he is geared to end child marriages in the country courtesy of India Government as Malawi continue streathening strategies aiming at empowering children through education.

Speaking at a State Banquet at Kamuzu Palace held in honour of visiting President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, Chakwera emphasised importance of empowering girls to reach their full potential.

“Three weeks ago, during my participation in the 79th United Nations General Assembly, I secured partnerships
and investments worth tens of millions of dollars in support of my agenda to end all incidences of child marriage by the year 2030. Accordingly, my office is
presently developing an action plan to leverage the financial investments we have secured for this cause, so that this global show of good will is translated into programmes that achieve this outcome by the time I leave office,” the Malawi leader said.

He cited President Murmu as a powerful example of what girls can achieve when protected at supported.

He also highlighted the banquet to be a great milestone for the growth of Malawi’s business environment as the presence of India President has generated enormous excitement in the business community in Malawi.

“To night banquet is no doubt a milestone for the welfare of the Malawian people, because it is a celebration of the Indian President’s announcement today that in response to my appeal for international support to offset the shortage of food that has been triggered by disastrous El Nino weather conditions in 23 of Malawi’s 28 districts, the Government of India has dispatched 1000 metric tons of rice that is already on the way,” he concluded.
