The Citizens for Justice and Equity (CJE) has urged the Government of Malawi to provide clear direction on the future of tobacco farming, saying continued uncertainty is leaving thousands of farmers vulnerable to financial losses.

In a statement released on Wednesday, CJE Executive Director Agape Khombe said the 2025/2026 tobacco season was affected by limited access to loans, high transport costs, delayed opening of auction floors, low tobacco volumes and poor prices.

Khombe also warned that declining global demand and stricter anti-tobacco policies are reducing market opportunities for Malawi’s main export crop.

“Farmers cannot continue to gamble their futures on a crop that the world is moving away from. The 2025–2026 season has proven that tobacco brings more debt than development for many households.

The government must lead with courage and truth,” he said.

Meanwhile, CJE has pledged to work with the Ministries of Agriculture and Trade and other stakeholders to support a smooth transition if Malawi diversifies into alternative cash crops.
