By Chrispine Lwanja United Democratic Front president (UDF) Atupere Muluzi has called for respect of democratic principles and protection of citizens’ rights following the summoning of CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa by the Malawi Police Service. Muluzi said Malawi needs an environment where citizens can freely raise concerns about issues of public interest without fear of intimidation. He emphasized that if Namiwa has been called to answer questions, he should be treated with dignity and accorded his constitutional rights. The UDF leader said matters involving public accountability should be handled through transparent and lawful processes, arguing that democracy is strengthened when citizens are able to question those holding public office. Muluzi further urged Malawians to protect freedom of expression, due process and the rule of law while promoting peaceful engagement on national issues.
