CAMFED encourages girls to do group business

Young women belonging to Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) Association (CAMA), a grouping of girls and young women who were previously supported with bursaries, have been urged to embrace the culture of doing business in groups for easy access to market linkages.

Chairperson for CAMA-Malawi, Chisomo Luciano, made the call in Nkhata Bay on Friday, when together with officials from CAMFED visited Umba wa Chiratu Chimoza Cooperative, which is run by members of CAMA in the district.

Luciano noted that while members may be engaged in individual business ventures, they can easily access viable markets if they produce and sell their produce and products as a group.

“I am impressed with what members of Umba wa Chiratu Chimoza are doing here because they bring their rice produce together and sell in large quantities.

This is something worth emulating if young women are to make notable changes in their communities,” said Luciano.

She then commended the district’s CAMA members for excelling in doing charitable activities, an initiative which she said is among the core values of the association.

“I am also glad to hear that in the last quarter alone, the Nkhata Bay CAMA has donated assorted items worth over K1 million to needy children and the elderly.

This is commendable and must not stop because, as CAMA, conducting Philanthropic activities is our core business,” she said.

According to Luciano, the association also encourages its members to be at the forefront working with communities to safeguard the rights of children, including championing the fight against child marriages.

Chairperson for Umba wa Chiratu Chimoza Cooperative, Lassie Kamanga, appreciated CAMFED for helping the group with a K64 million business grant, which she said was used to train members in business management, construction of a warehouse and purchase of a rice milling machine.

“Once we start rice milling, we anticipate employing young people from within this area. We are also seeing our families attaining financial stability.

Since this is the only rice milling centre in the area, we are sure that farmers within this area will also be relieved because they will no longer travel long distances to have their rice milled, hence contributing to the growth of our business,” said Kamanga.
