By Yamikani Yapuwa – Mana – Malawi Exclusive Government on Saturday elevated two traditional leaders in Thyolo District, with Senior Chief Ngolongoliwa and Sub Traditional Authority Sam formally installed into their new positions following their promotion by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika. Go and serve the People – Dr Phiri seems to be saying Presiding over the installation ceremony at Thyolo Boma, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Dr. Ben Malunga Phiri, said traditional leaders remain central to community development, conflict resolution and the preservation of peace. He urged the newly elevated leaders to uphold integrity, transparency and accountability as they take on greater responsibilities. The promotion of these chiefs comes with greater responsibility. The public will expect more from them, and I urge them to lead with integrity, fairness, transparency and remain free from corruption as they serve their people, said Dr. Phiri. Member of Parliament for Thyolo Goliati Constituency Maureen Namwali welcomed the promotions, saying they reflect government’s recognition of the important role traditional leaders play in strengthening local governance and supporting development initiatives. By recognizing the importance of chiefs in government, it strengthens local governance and accelerate development initiatives in the district, she said. Speaking on behalf of traditional leaders in the district, Chairperson of the Thyolo Chiefs Council Senior Chief Nsabwe thanked President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and the government for recognising the contribution of chiefs to maintaining peace, mobilising communities and advancing development at the grassroots.
