By Yamikani Yapuwa – Mana – Malawi Exclusive Thyolo District is poised for a major expansion in agricultural trade and enterprise following the launch of a K15 billion modern market under the Transforming Agriculture through Diversification and Entrepreneurship (TRADE) Programme. Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Dr. Ben Malunga Phiri, on Saturday presided over the groundbreaking ceremony, saying the market will stimulate local economic growth by bringing business opportunities closer to communities and reducing the need for traders to travel to Limbe. He said the project will also support value addition in the district’s dairy industry, helping farmers earn more from their produce. We must uplift our local areas because that is how we reduce economic migration. Once this market is completed, many people will no longer need to travel to Limbe for business. This area is also a major milk-producing hub, and government is looking at promoting value addition through processing industries to increase farmers incomes, said Dr. Phiri. TRADE National Programme Coordinator, Dr. Barbara Ntapara, said the market has been designed to strengthen agricultural commercialisation by providing infrastructure that meets the needs of farmers and traders. The market will have 74 shops, 138 market stalls, cold rooms, warehouses and anchor shops. These facilities will enable farmers and traders, especially dairy farmers, to market their products in a safe and organised environment while reducing post-harvest losses, she said. Thyolo District Council Chairperson Councillor George Jailosi described the project as a significant investment in the district’s development, saying it is expected to create jobs, expand business opportunities and increase locally generated revenue through market fees and other local taxes. The modern market is being constructed under the TRADE Programme with funding from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) through the OPEC Fund.
