A Blantyre resident has questioned the operations of the Mozambican Consulate in Nancholi, along the Blantyre-Chikwawa Road, after being denied a visa to fly to Maputo. The applicant, who applied a month before August 2025 to visit family and friends, said he followed all proper channels and was told to wait three weeks for approval from Maputo. He was eventually denied without any reason despite his sponsor declaring sufficient funds.

The disappointed resident says, what is more frustrating is that, while applicants at the Blantyre consulate face long delays and silent refusals, foreign nationals from countries including the Netherlands, Britain, USA and Portugal are equally denied at the consulate but are issued visas on arrival at Zobue border without hassle, creating an impression of two systems.”

The complainant has appealed to authorities in Maputo and Blantyre to provide reasons for denials, publish and respect processing times, and harmonize standards at the consulate and the border, asking what the use of maintaining the Blantyre consulate is, if visas are readily available at the border.

LETTER IN VERBATIM

Dear Editor, let my pen echo my loud cry….

MY MOZAMBIQUE VISA ORDEAL

A month before August 2025, I applied for a visa at the Mozambican Consulate in Nancholi along Blantyre – Chikwawa Road. I needed to fly to Maputo to visit family and friends.

A bonafide citizen with a valid passport, I followed the proper channel. I submitted my documents and was told to wait three weeks for approval from Maputo.

After three weeks, I was denied. No reason was given. No clear explanation of what was wrong. I had done everything by the book, yet I was left stranded and had failed to travel as earlier planned.

What is more frustrating is what I learned later. While I waited for weeks only to be refused despite sponsor declaring enough money, applicants including foreign nationals from Netherlands, Britain, USA and even Portugal (even though it once colonized Mozambique) are likewise denied visa at the Mozambican consulate in Blantyre, and are ironically issued one on arrival at Zobue border without hassle.

Why punish those who follow the rules?

If a visa is available at the border, why is an application at the Consulate subjected to a long delay and a silent refusal? It feels like two systems: one difficult for those who apply properly and want to fly, and one easy for those who appear at the border.

Mozambique is our neighbour and friend. Many of us have family and business ties there. That is why the system must be fair and transparent.

I appeal to the authorities in Maputo and the Consulate in Blantyre to: give reasons for denials, publish and respect processing times, and apply the same standard at the Consulate and at the border.

Those who follow the normal channel should not be disadvantaged for doing the right thing.

And if I may ask, what’s the use of keeping consulate in Blantyre when visas can only be issued at the border?
