Malawi Exclusive Speedy’s Foods Industries Ltd is turning agricultural waste into a valuable resource for Malawian farmers. This is a timely scientific magic of transforming waste to wealth through its Organic Fertilizer Project, which began in 2022. The initiative uses locally available materials such as chicken manure, maize and rice husks, leaves, grass and other crop residues. The materials are carefully combined to provide organic matter and nutrients while improving soil health. According to Project Manager and Consultant Alexander Oonnoonny, the project was inspired by two challenges: farmers struggling with the high cost of fertilizer and large quantities of agricultural waste being dumped or burned. Said Oonnoonny: “We wanted to turn waste into something valuable — fertilizer that returns nutrients and organic matter to the soil while helping farmers.” He explained that , major focus is nitrogen conservation and chicken manure is naturally rich in nitrogen, but nitrogen can be lost as ammonia during handling and composting. “Speedy’s is therefore exploring methods of retaining and recovering this nitrogen so that more nutrients remain available for agriculture,” added Oonnoonny. He further said, the company also uses fermentation, molasses and different organic materials to encourage beneficial microbial activity. Microorganisms involved in nutrient cycling can help transform organic materials and support healthier soils. Malawi Exclusive learned that by converting crop residues and livestock waste into useful agricultural inputs, Speedy’s is developing a circular waste-to-wealth model that can reduce waste, create employment, provide additional income opportunities for farmers and improve soil fertility. “For Speedy’s, the goal is not simply to manufacture fertilizer, but to help build healthier soils, conserve nutrients and promote more sustainable agriculture in Malawi,” concluded Oonnoonny.
