Chiefs and Karonga south constituents have hailed their Member of Parliament (MP) Uchizi Mkandawire for using his pocket to pay electricity bill at Chilumba Rural Hospital in order to keep mortuary running.

This publication understand that the hospital had no funds for electricity bill and that the management were hunting for a quick help from welwishers.

According to some chiefs and constituents who talked with this publication, out of all people they requested only their MP managed to come to their resque.

Senior Chief Wasambo thanked Mkandawire especially for keeping his promise he made during the official opening of the said mortuary.

”If you don’t know, this facility we are talking about is one of Mkandawire’s vision. It was constructed with fund from CDF and since opened, it has really helped us. It would have been a disaster to us as community if the facility stopped running,” he said.

Peter Banda who is one of the constituents said what Mkandawire has done has proved to them that he is indeed after serving them and not his interest.

”This is a history to us. No any MP from our area has done this before. Even those who have came out to contest in the coming elections are unable to do that, an indication that their decisions are for themselves,” said Banda.

In remark, Mkandawire who is also Minister of Sports said it is his prayer to see the facility continue working as it saves the expenses the community were injecting before.

In the past, people in the area were travelling a long distance (about 70 kilometres) to Karonga district hospital to access mortuary services.
