His Excellency Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera in Blantyre earlier today

Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, has committed to spearhead and champion human rights, democratisation and rule of law in the country.

Chakwera said this in Blantyre when he led Malawians in commemorating the International Human Rights Day and the 75th Anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) at Chigumukire Primary School Ground in Chileka, Blantyre.

President Chakwera repeatedly advocated for justice, equality and dignity for all Malawians irrespective of race, gender, religion, political affiliation and tribe, among others.

Chakwera urged Malawians to help the country attain economic independence saying the issues of that nature cannot be left to Government alone.

Chakwera has since pledged to continue supporting constitutional bodies such as Legal Aide Bureau, Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC), and Office of the Ombudsman just to mention a few.

“Ours is a commitment to actively engage in the United Nations human rights mechanisms, including the Human Rights Council and treaty bodies. Ours is a commitment to adopt legislation and policies that provide enhanced protection for marginalized groups, including women, children, older persons and persons with disabilities so that “no one is left behind”,” he said.

The President said his Government will ensure greater accountability and transparency in the promotion and protection of human rights by strengthening oversight bodies and public institutions.

The event comes at a time when the Malawi leader continues to score highly from the international lens in as far as upholding of human rights is concerned.

Many human rights activists, both local and international, also contend that President Chakwera has over the past three years managed to reset Malawi’s human rights record by capitalising on the goodwill from Malawians and the global community.
