Human rights and social commentator Undule Mwakasungula has denounced hate speech which former President Peter Mutharika cited at his rally he held at Nyambadwe in Blantyre.

Undule says the rally by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) led by former President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika (APM) at Njamba Freedom Park on Sunday 12th May, 2024 is an indication to the fundamental freedoms we are enjoying in Malawi.

He says this freedom to gather and speak is a pillar of our democracy, which we must always cherish and uphold.

Mwakasungula said as a country we must take pride in our strong democratic institutions as a commitment of our government in promoting and safeguarding the fundamental freedoms.

He said it is important that remarks made at such gatherings must constructively contribute to our country’s unity, wellbeing and progress.

He says the allegations of socio-economic hardships, highlighted by APM during his speech are not new concerns anyway.

“Politics aside APM would have acknowledged that some of these challenges were inherited by Tonse government from his leadership under DPP administration. An honest admission of these difficulties therefore would be the first step towards giving hope to Malawians in finding solutions as he has shown interest to stand again,” he said.

Mwakasungula said APM remarks regrettably, could also potentially deepen political polarization in the country.

“Such statements, which aim to divide rather than unite us, should not be tolerated. As a nation, our strength lies in our unity, and we must resist any efforts that seek to divide us along political lines. In this era, promoting harmony and understanding, even amidst our political differences, is more important for Malawi,” he said.
