Malawi under President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has made tremendous strides in as far as the energy sector alone is concerned. Precisely, 2023 is the year when Preaident Chakwera ended the problem of chronic blackouts once and for all. As we all can attest, blackouts are now a thing of the past. Realising that Malawi has been over reliant on the hydro powered electricity, the Chakwera administration through EGENCO has engaged in diversification of the source of energy. This quest has seen the Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola officially launching the construction and installation of 10 Megawats Solar Powet Plant in Salima district. According to the Electricity Supply Cooperation of Malawi ESCOM, the project will be implemented in two phases and this is the first phase of the scalable 20 Megawatts Solar Power Plant project estimated to be completed in 18 months.
