Signing  ceremony

Since Malawi qualified for the IMF’s Exchanged Credit Facility (ECF) over a week ago, there have been outpouring of goodwill into the country.

All of a sudden Malawi has become so attractive in the eyes of multilateral institutions and countries, all thanks to the vote of confidence to Malawi by the IMF.

Over the course of time, we have seen the World Bank and the African Development Bank coming in with various monetary packages to Malawi to finance different projects.

Just today 24th November, the Malawi government signed a US$1.7 billion (almost MK2.8 trillion) agreement with the United Nations aimed at accelerating achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Speaking during the signing ceremony in Lilongwe, Secretary to President and Cabinet Collen Zamba said the signing of the agreement marks the beginning in the realisation of the SDGs. She expressed hope that the agreement will result in meaningful transformation in the coming years.

She said: “We have much work ahead on this collective journey to uplift the lives and hopes of all Malawians. I want to reaffirm the government’s commitment to the cooperation framework.”

She said that the framework articulates integrated solutions across four areas requiring partnership namely inclusive economic growth; Sustainable investment in human capital development, climate change adaptation; and environmental sustainability.

In her remarks the UN representative to Malawi, Rebecca Ada Donto said the framework will greatly contribute to the realization of the Malawi 2063 agenda particularly in the areas of health, education and climate change adaptation.

About US$600 million (almost MK1 trillion) of the the $1.7 billion has already been remitted to those areas.
