The Malawian youths going to work in Israel are part of the long standing exchange program existed between the two countries. This is not just a one off arrangement as the two countries pursue the agreement contained in the Joint Cooperation Agreement (JCA) which allow two countries to exchange workforce. Over the years the JCA has seen Malawian and Israel contingent going the opposite side – a thing which has strengthened the diplomatic and trade ties. Of the two countries, Malawi has been the main beneficiary of the arrangement as the practical and skill sets acquired in Israel has greatly improved agriculture especially in the areas of irrigation. So the news that there is an arrangement to send Malawian youth in Israel should not be surprising at all as this is a routine arrangement, this is not the first time. The only thing considered “first” there is an increase in numbers being dispatched this time around. The trend has been that Malawi was sending 40 people in the past especially from Lilongwe University of Science and Agriculture (LUANAR and NRC). This dates back to the days the college was called Bunda. This time around, in pursuit of President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera’s quest of job creation and youth empowerment, the Malawi government lobbied for an incresse in number of the beneficiaries for the programe hence the increass in nunber to 200 that is expected to leave for Israel. While we canot talk about other countries, it is worthy noting that Malawi is not the only country that has been exporting labour to Israel as others have been doing the same as part of the poverty alleviation in their respective countries. As we are writing this, Sri Lanka is about to send 20 000 workers to Israel to work in the farms and construction sectors which is a similar arrangement like ours. According to the information available, the Malawian youths; most of whom were just roaming around due to lack of job opportunities will be getting US$1,500 (K2.6 million per month).
