Division locking the main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) are refusing to die. As we speak, two teams are running the party-the one for the Secretary General Gelzelder wa Jeffrey backed by Leader of Opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa and the other led by Peter Mutharika and include old guards like Francis Mphepo, George Chaponda , Chimwemwe Chipungu just to mention a few. While Secretary General Wa Geffrey was busy with the National Governing Council (NGC) meeting at Golden Peacock earlier today, Madala team was busy flying adverts refuting the said NGC meeting. DPP publicity Secretary Shadric Namalomba says President Peter Mutharika has never sanctioned any NGC meeting. “The Party is informing all members of the National Governing Council (NGC) and its entire membership that there is no Governing Council meeting,” reads the statement. Namalomba says the meeting as called by the Secretary General was also not sanctioned by the Central Executive Committee. In addition, the Secretary General did not consult the President as required of her by the Constitution of the Party. “The Party is aware of an application by interested parties for an injunction which the court has declined on the basis that all matters to do with the convention have been adjourned to 12th January 2024,” says Namalomba. Namalomba described the NGC meeting of as unprocedural and illegal. “His Excellency, the Former President of the Republic of Malawi and President of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika will in due course call for a meeting of the Central Executive Committee to discuss and map the way forward. This press statement serves to inform all members of the NGC not to attend this illegal meeting. Sanctions will apply to those that defy this order,” says Namalomba. However Jeffrey wa Jeffrey says she has communicated to Mutharika several times but he has never responded to the communications.
