M’mbelwa University kicks off: Minister Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima impressed with the progress

Minister of Education, Honourable Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima M.P., on Monday inspected construction of Inkosi ya ya Makhosi M’mbelwa University hostel project which has commenced in Mzimba.

The visit follows the recent awarding of the contract to two contractors and these are Paramount Group and DEC Construction companies which are both on the site.

Speaking during the tour , Kambauwa said was impressed on what she saw on the project. The Minister said the first phase will cost K190Billion and the whole project will cost K450Billion.

The Minister said, “The President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera is more committed to ensuring the university project is completed in time. I am happy to reveal that the project will be completed in 18 months.”

When visited the site, it was found that bulldozzers, caterpillars and make shift containers which are being used as offices by the contractors.

Our visit also found that part of thick bushes in the northern part of the site are fully cleared and cordoned off.

District Commissioner who was at the site Rodney Simwaka has since commended Government for kicking off the project.

Meanwhile one of the contractors, Paramount Holdings Limited (PHL) has assured authorities that intends to complete the construction of the prestigious Inkosi ya Makosi M’mbelwa University’s (IMMU) girls hostel within 18 months as per the contract agreement.

PHL is one of the contractors awarded for the construction of the university formerly known as Mombera University which was abandoned for years after former President Peter Mutharika presided over the project’s ground-breaking ceremony in 2015.

Only tar mark roads en-route to the site were constructed and are in use.

“We have beed awarded al MK8.7 billion contract to construct hostels which will be housed in a five storey building. Currently, we are doing bush clearing of the site, importing construction materials and purchasing local materials and we assure the public that will complete the project in time,” he said.
