Malawi has joined the international community in commemorating the International Day of Education under the theme, “Learning for Lasting Peace.”

Ministry of Education publicist, Mphatso Nkuonera says the day was set aside six years ago by the United Nations for nations to consolidate gains made in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs).

“This year’s theme calls upon member states to reflect on the role of education in peace building. Specifically, the theme invites all stakeholders to hold hands and commit to invest in education for the betterment of society,” he said.

Members of the general public are also invited to join the commemoration either physically at Mkwichi Secondary School in Lilongwe or by putting on their preferred school uniforms at their duty stations to show support for education and the values education stands for globally.

The commemoration comes barely a day after President Chakwera officially received 66 new secondary schools constructed under the Secondary Education Expansion for Development (SEED) Project with funding from the United States Government.
