By Kondanani Chilimunthaka On Tuesday, 13th February 2024, President Lazarus Chakwera held a meeting with representatives of the Malawi Public Universities Union at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe where he assured students from all the six public universities that the government will take care of their grievances. Addressing the students, Chakwera emphasized on the crucial role the students have in shaping the future of Malawi, urging them to strive for greater achievements. The President then pledged to among others review the funding towards students’ loans and the welfare, emphasizing the need for transparency in the loan disbursement. However, the President expressed appreciation for the recognition by the students of his efforts in initiatives aiming at reshaping the education system in the country to benefit all. Speaking on behalf of the union, Alexander Kude expressed gratitude to President Lazarus Chakwera for engaging the union on matters of significance. He then commended the President for his integral role in driving positive change for the nation. “We are glad that your administration is working on construction on Inkosi M’mbelwa University. We also appreciate you for the increase in student allowances from K200,000 to the current K350,000. This depicts the zeal you have in driving positive change that the country desires” Said Kude. Writing on his official Facebook page President Chakwera said; “Human Capital Development as an enabler of Malawi Vision 2063, placed university education as a key component in the realization of the long-term development agenda.
