Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has today launched Kholongo Dam construction in Madisi Dowa District.

The dam will hold 25 billion litres of water, benefitting over 130,000 people. It will provide potable water and irrigated land for 4,400 farming households. The project is expected to benefit Kasese, Madisi, Mtiti, and Mponela towns.

Speaking during the function Chakwera said , the project which is expected to be finished by February 2025, will not only alleviate water scarcity but also support irrigation needs.

The president said on the occasion of commemorating this year’s World Water Day, he was happy to officially commissioned construction works of Kholongo Multipurpose Dam in Dowa.

He said this is an environmentally-compliant water facility that upon completion will provide potable water to over 130,000 households at Mponela Town and surrounding areas. The dam will also facilitate irrigation farming, fisheries and recreation services for communities.

“The dam is one of the flagship projects, and the only one under the water sector, to be executed under the decade-long Malawi Vision 2063 Implementation Plan 1,” he said.

He said in line with this year’s theme “Leveraging Water for Peace”, his administration fully appreciates that water remains a critical resource that reinforces peace and economic development for the nation.

“This is why our efforts around water resources management are aimed at giving every Malawian equitable access to potable water by 2030 in line with Sustainable Development Goal #6 and Malawi Vision” he said.
