By Watipaso Mzungu – Malawi Exclusive Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), a Pan African alliance focused on empowerment of farming communities across the continent, has provided to the Government of Malawi the sum of US$45 million to enable the latter promote agricultural productivity and improve soil health. The announcement about the donation was made in Nairobi, Kenya, on the sidelines of the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit. While in Kenya President Chakwera met AGRA Chairperson, Hailemariam Dessalegn Boshe, who expressed the alliance’s commitment to providing sustained support towards sustainable farming in addressing soil degradation as well as deforestation. President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera received the US$45 million package on behalf of Malawians, describing it as a timely response. “This funding will aid the process of restoring the country’s soil nutrition which has been depleted for decades,” he said.
