By Kondanani Chilimunthaka President Lazarus Chakwera has vowed to continue with implementation of his agenda and vision regardless of political accusations, describing such accusations as baseless. He made the remarks in Lilongwe at Bingu International Convention Center (BICC) on Thursday 16th May 2024 as he was launching the Malawi Agricultural Mechanisation Initiative which will see farmers practicing farming using tractors acquired on loan from Philip Morris International in partnership with Pyxus Malawi. Speaking during the launch of the initiative, President Chakwera assured the nation that he will continue to implement initiatives that will make Malawi a self-reliant nation. “In 2022 I went to Belgium to attend the summit discussing the relationship between African countries and countries under the EU. It was during that summit that I met the officials from Philip Morris and we proceeded to their offices in Switzerland where we discussed how they can assist our country in practicing modern farming and the mega farms. “I am happy today that what we discussed has materialized and everyone is able to see the fruits. My appeal is that those benefiting from the initiative should take care of the machines and repay the loans so that they benefit other farmers as it is a revolving loan” Said the President. Chakwera further commended Philip Morris for partnering Pyxus Malawi in the Agricultural Mechanisation Initiative, saying it will benefit many Malawian farmers. The Malawi leader has since urged Malawians to consider preparing their fields early for the next farming season. Speaking earlier, Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale said his Ministry is able to implement its vision because of the alacrity of President Lazarus Chakwera, saying the launch of such initiatives are the fruits of the willingness by the President. Kawale further told the gathering that the recent agreement between America and Malawi for construction of roads will benefit farmers a lot as their activities rely on good roads network. At least 22 farmers have benefited from the Malawi Agricultural Mechanisation Initiative which has provided tractors on a 5-year loan.
