Bird’s View Eye – Column -Every Wednesday When the Israelites departed from Egypt under the tutelage of Moses, they embarked on a journey shrouded in uncertainty, guided only by their unwavering belief and faith in the God of their ancestors. The Bible vividly chronicles this arduous sojourn, marked by hunger, natural challenges and numerous setbacks. Despite these trials, their leaders inspired them to gaze forward with the hope of reaching the Promised Land of Canaan. The story of the Exodus, the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to Canaan, mirrors the presidency of Lazarus Chakwera. Upon assuming office, Chakwera vowed to lead Malawians to their own Canaan, embodying the vision of his Chakwera SUPER Hi5 initiative. Yet, he implored the nation for patience, emphasising the necessity of mending broken systems before the bountiful fruits of his leadership could be harvested. Now, as the dawn of his promises begins to break, it becomes evident that, much like Moses parting the Red Sea with his staff to pave a way for the Israelites, Chakwera is steering Malawi ever closer to its own Canaan. Like a fleeting dream woven with the threads of hope, an announcement was made a few days ago by the Central and Eastern African Railway (CEAR) about the resumption of railway transportation in the country. This proclamation heralded the long-awaited revival of rail transport for goods and services between Blantyre and Lilongwe. The resurrection of the railway system stands out as a symbol of progress. By June 2024, cargo trains are set to traverse between Lilongwe and Blantyre for the first time in 25 years, a significant milestone poised to enhance the efficiency of goods transportation and invigorate economic activity. So far, economists have hailed this move, celebrating its potential to alleviate the transportation burden, for rail transport is known to be more cost-effective than other modes. This development is a shining gem among the myriad milestones of President Lazarus Chakweras tenure, marked by significant strides in Malawis progress and remarkable achievements across various sectors. Although not all aspirations have been fully realised, the progress since he assumed office is undeniably promising, laying a robust foundation for the future. Among the most commendable aspects of President Chakweras administration is the historic allocation of 30 percent of the national budget to development projects. This unwavering commitment has the potential to catalyse critical infrastructure improvements, most notably in the realm of road development. The road network in Lilongwe has undergone unprecedented expansion, tripling in size since 2020a feat surpassing the combined achievements of all three previous administrations. This includes the rehabilitation of a neglected 300km section of the M1 from the era of Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda, alongside the ambitious Malawi Second Compact, which envisions 301km of new roads, facilitating smoother transportation of agricultural produce to urban markets. In the realm of energy security, President Chakweras administration has wrought substantial improvements. Their concerted efforts have doubled Malawis energy capacity, edging the nation closer to the ambitious goal of achieving 1000 megawatts. This development is vital for the countrys growth, as reliable energy is the lifeblood of both industrial operations and daily life. President Chakwera has also made food security a paramount focus. The establishment of a Mega Farm Unit to revive the agricultural estate sector, provision of loans for large-scale farmers, and the launch of a tractor ownership scheme are strategic initiatives designed to break the cycle of hunger. Furthermore, efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in wheat production and the tripling of the Constituency Development Fund to K200 million per fiscal year reflect a comprehensive approach to agricultural development and rural infrastructure enhancement. Additionally, the administrations commitment to improving living conditions for security officers through the construction of new housing addresses long-standing promises unmet by previous administrations. This move not only boosts morale among security forces but also underscores the governments dedication to the welfare of its personnel. Despite these laudable achievements, President Chakweras administration faces unwarranted criticism and underappreciation. While opposition parties play a crucial role in providing checks and balances, it is imperative they refrain from misleading the public about the administration’s accomplishments. It is essential to recognise that despite the myriad challenges posed by natural and global forces, the current administration has demonstrated resilience by implementing visible and tangible projects. In conclusion, President Chakweras administration has made significant progress in infrastructure, energy, transportation and food security among other sectors. These forward-looking initiatives eloquently attest to the administration’s unwavering commitment to national development. It is crucial for public influencers across all platforms to ensure a balanced and accurate public discourse, reinforcing the positive trajectory of Malawi under President Chakweras visionary leadership.
