On Monday, 24th June 2024, Inkosi Ya Makhosi M’Mbelwa, the fifth, led Mzimba chiefs who called on President Lazarus Chakwera at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe to deliver the message of condolence on behalf of the people of Mzimba district, following the demise of Dr. Saulos Chilima who until his death was the country’s Vice President.

Delivering the message, Royal Highness, Inkosi Ya Makhosi M’Mbelwa V, commended President Chakwera for standing strong regardless of negative comments from some quotas of the society on the tragic plane crash that claimed the life of Chilima and eight others in Chikangawa forest in Mzimba district.

“We want to thank God for giving us a strong leader in you. That statement you made at the funeral service was so unifying. We know that you and Chilima were close. We want to encourage you not to lose sight because of what people are saying out there. We know that it’s not easy, but let’s put our trust in God” Said the Royal Highness.

His sentiments were echoed by Inkosi Senior Chief Mtwalo, saying the people of Mzimba are mourning with President Chakwera at the loss of the Vice President and eight others, adding that the death has affected every Malawian citizen.

In his remarks, President Lazarus Chakwera mourned Chilima by remembering the cordial working relationship the two had despite others trying to create a gap between them.

He then assured the chiefs that his Government has allowed German experts to do thorough investigation so that people know exactly what led to the tragedy on 10th June this year, promising to make public the outcome of the investigation once it is concluded.
