Chakwera saves Southern Region from hunger via cash transfer program

In line with the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) report which predicted that 13 districts in the Southern region faces hunger,  President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has ensured no one dies of hunger.

Speaking in Thyolo in the area of Traditional authority Chimaliro  principal secretary in the Mimistry of Gender Dr. Nertha Semphere has urged 14, 093 people who are benefitting from the cash transfer money to use the cash for intended purposes.

In the programme a beneficiary receives K150, 000 per month.

The Social Cash Transfer program is one of the programs under National Social Support Programs which implement the consumption support pillar. The program targets the bottom 10 percent of the poverty strata who are ultra-poor and labor constraint.

The overall objective is to contributing towards reducing poverty and vulnerability and enhancing resilience among ultra-poor and labour constrained households through payment of regular unconditional cash transfers.

The programme is there to contribute to national efforts to reduce poverty and hunger among ultra-poor and labor constrained households.

The programme has helped to increase school enrolment and attendance of children living in targeted households.

The program receives financial and technical support from Government of Malawi (GoM), the German Government through Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), Irish Aid, the World Bank, European Union (EU), UNICEF and International Labor Organization (ILO).

President Chakwera has rolled out the program is in all 28 districts and is currently reaching 292,518 beneficiary households and 1,242,611 beneficiary members
