State President , Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, on Tuesday presided over the launch of the new Global Fund Grant amounting to US$525 (about K909 billion) to be used in the fight against Tuberculosis (TB), Malaria, and HIV/AIDS at a ceremony that took place at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe. The Grant falls under the Public Sector Principal Recipient Grant Cycle 7 and will run from the year 2024 to 2027. Global Fund grants have significantly contributed to the reduction of death rates in the country by investing in the treatment and prevention of HIV, TB and Malaria strengthening countries overall health system. The Global Fund provides grants in HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and health systems strengthening to low- and middle-income countries. Speaking after signing the agreement, President Chakwera said the three diseases have always been a problem to the people of Malawi thereby hindering the country’s progress. He also assured donors of the funds that the money will be used for it’s intended purpose. “The funds will help us consolidate the gains we have achieved over the years. We are highly indebted to Global Fund for their support. We will continue to invest and strengthening our health system,” he said. Speaking earlier, Head of Global Fund Management Division, Mark Eddington lauded Malawi for it’s unwavering determination to eradicate HIV /AIDS, Malaria and TB. He said Global Fund is ready to continue working with Malawi in strengthening the country’s health system. Minister of Finance Simplex Chithyola described Global Fund as a reliable partner who has always been there for Malawi. He said the funds will help the country to sustain the gains that have been made in the fight against the infectious diseases. “These funds will help Malawi government to strengthen the fight against Tuberculosis TB and HIV / AIDS in the country,”he said.
