Malawi leader President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, on Friday presided over the conferment of Senior Counsel (SC) on eight Justices of Appeal at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe. The title of senior counsel is given to senior lega minds in countries that had once been part of the British Empire The honour of Senior Counsel is conferred by the president on recommendations of the honour committee under section 52 of the Legal Education and Legal Practitioners Act of 2018. Speaking at the ceremony, President Chakwera said the appointment is not political but rather a fulfillment of what the law requires. He urged the new Senior Counsels to execute their duties in accordance with the rule of law. The Malawi leader also called new SC’s to preserve the integrity associated with the title. The eight Justices of Appeal are; Healey Potani, John Nelson Katsala, Ivy Chatha Kamanga, Mankhambira Charles Ching’ani Mkandawire, Rolland Mbvundula, Dorothy Nyakaunda Kamanga, Charles Mkandawire, Dingiswayo Madise, and Silvester Augustino Kalembera. Secretary to the President (SPC) Colleen Zamba, Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo, Chief Justice Rezine Mzikamanda and Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda, among several others, were all present to witness the event.
