Malawi leader president Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has today presided over the official launch of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Project at the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Kanengo Substation in Lilongwe. The multi-million project is funded through a grant of $20.2 million from Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP). ESCOM has contributed US$2.4million while the Malawi Government has provided tax waver to the project. BESS are advanced technologies that store energy for later use, capturing excess energy generated during peak productionāespecially from renewable sources like solar and wind. The project seeks to help reduce power supply outages and improve overall grid performance by enhancing grid stability. This project marks a pivotal step in ESCOM’s strategy to improve the reliability and accessibility of electricity across the nation. Upon arrival, the Malawi leader who was welcomed by Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola, Secretary to the President and Cabinet (SPC) Colleen Zamba and several top government and ESCOM officials.
