Malawi’s First Lady, Madame Monica Chakwera, has expressed concern over the growing violence against women and young girls. Speaking at Mpatsa Secondary School Ground in Phalombe District, Madame Chakwera launched the 16 Days of Activism. She emphasized the need for proper care and support for young girls, including access to education. Madame Chakwera appealed to the Malawi Police to arrest anyone found abusing girls. “We stand united to end violence and create a safe space,” she said. “The launch of the 2024 Sixteen Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign is a call to action and a reminder of our collective responsibility.” Madame Chakwera stated that the campaign is a commitment to protecting lives, empowering communities, and fostering equality for all. This year’s event was observed under the theme “Unite to End Violence Against Women and Girls in Malawi.” Minister of Gender, Hon. Jean Muwonaowauza Sendeza, emphasized the need for all Malawians to join hands in protecting and promoting the rights of women and children.
