The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has recorded a total of 19 road accidents during the 2024 Christmas holiday. This represents a 21 percent decrease from the 24 road accidents that were recorded during the same period in 2023. However, the number of fatalities has risen significantly, with 13 deaths recorded in 2024 compared to 8 deaths that were registered in 2023. The number of people injured from road accidents has also declined from 34 in 2023 to 24 in 2024. Among the fatalities this year, 5 victims were motorcyclists while 2 were pedestrians. During the period, MPS enforced road traffic rules and regulations and booked motorists for various offenses. 841 motorists were booked for speeding, 1,475 for exceeding seating capacity, 173 for drink and drive and 519 for operating unroadworthy vehicles. MPS urges all road users to remain vigilant and adhere to road traffic rules and regulations throughout the festive season to prevent further accidents.
