NEEF can help Malawi to achieve food security- Minister

Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Moses Kunkuyu, has described the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) fertilizer loan programme as a solution for restoring Malawi’s reputation as a food basket.

He made the remarks at Lithipe on Friday during the launch of the NEEF fertilizer distribution exercise in Dedza District.

Kunkuyu indicated that the programme has the potential to revitalize the agriculture sector, which has long been neglected by previous administrations.

He urged farmers to work diligently to ensure that Dedza remains a food basket and continues to supply agricultural commodities throughout the country.

The minister assured the public that President Chakwera is committed to ensure that farmers are benefiting from various government programmes aimed at enhancing effectiveness and impact.

Speaking earlier, Board Chairperson for NEEF, Jefta Mtemwa said those who applied for the programme should exercise patience, as this will enable Malawians to access food and enhance their income generation.

He also expressed satisfaction with the progress made by the programme, noting that from its start last year through 2025, funding has increased from K25 billion to K150 million, which he described as remarkable progress.
In his remarks, Member of Parliament for Dedza Central East Constituency, Joshua Malango, indicated that NEEF fertilizer loan programme has come at an opportune time while farmers are preparing for the 2024/2025 farming season.

He advocated for additional fertilizer support for the people of Dedza, who he said play a crucial role in agricultural production and can feed the entire nation.
Malango assured NEEF officials that farmers in the district would repay the loans, to ensure the programme’s sustainability and align with President Chakwera’s vision.

Speaking during the ceremony, councillor for Chingoni Ward, Boniface Ned Nyombe, emphasised that people of Dedza are hardworking individuals who depend on farming for their livelihoods.

He assured NEEF that the community will repay the loans to maintain the programmes continuity.
Nyombe highlighted that NEEF fertilizer loan distribution aligns well with the Malawi 2063 Vision of making Malawi a self-reliant nation.
In his remarks, Senior Chief Kaphuka hailed President Dr Lazarus Chakwera for initiating the programme in his area, stating that it will significantly benefit local farmers.

A Beneficiary, Billias Chintondo expressed gratitude to the government for the timely distribution of fertilizer, stating that through NEEF, farmers in the area would be able to enhance and maximize their crop production.
He also commended President Chakwera for launching such a programme, which is expected to revitalize agricultural activities in the region.
