The Office of the President and Cabinet has strongly denied allegations that South African businessman Mr. Zunaid Moti has been appointed to a diplomatic position by the Government of Malawi or given preferential treatment in government contracts.
In a press statement released on 14th July, 2026  and signed by
Chief Secretary Justin Adack K. Saidi, PhD,  the OPC described the claims circulating on social media as “false, malicious and deliberately designed to mislead the public.”
“For the avoidance of doubt, Mr. Moti has not been appointed to any Government position, diplomatic or otherwise. Neither has the Government awarded him any form of preferential treatment,” the statement read. “Any suggestion to the contrary is wholly fabricated and without any factual basis.”
The OPC also addressed claims linking Mr. Moti to mining licenses. The statement clarified that since the DPP Government took over, a moratorium on the issuance of mineral licenses has been in place to allow for a clean-up and compliance audit of the cadastre system.
“Nobody has been issued with a new licence as portrayed by the false story and no new licences can be seen in the system,” it said.
The Chief Secretary warned that the deliberate publication of false information to damage reputations or undermine public institutions is a serious offence under Malawian law. Citizens have since been urged to verify information before sharing and to use digital platforms responsibly.
The statement further stressed that the administration of His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika remains committed to integrity, transparency, and the fight against corruption.
“As the Government remains firmly focused on rebuilding the economy and implementing transformative reforms, there is absolutely no room for deliberate misinformation, political mudslinging or character assassination,” Dr. Saidi said.
